~About Yamanaka Lacquerware~
Yamanaka Lacquerware originated during the Tensho era (1573-1592 AD) of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
It began when a group of woodworkers with logging permits moved from Echizen to the village of Masago, about 20km upstream from Yamanaka Onsen in Kaga City.
From around the middle of the Edo period, lacquering and maki-e techniques were introduced from Aizu, Kyoto, and Kanazawa, and along with wooden materials, it developed as a production area for lacquered items such as tea ceremony utensils, as well as souvenirs for visitors to the hot springs of Yamanaka Onsen.
